DRAFT WINONA COUNTY TRAIL PLAN
The Winona County Trail Plan that is being presented at today’s Open House is a draft plan, the work of a trail planning committee that has been meeting since late in 2009 to develop a county-wide, multi-use trail plan. The trail planning committee, comprised of city and county staff, and community volunteers, seeks the input of county residents now, before the plan is finalized, so that your input can be incorporated into the final trail plan.
The best bicycle trails connect destinations on scenic routes that form loops of various lengths for riders of all abilities to enjoy. A good trail plan also provides connections that allow residents to walk, bicycle and commute within and between communities. The development of local and regional trails is receiving increasing support as we come to understand the vital role exercise and activity plays in maintaining our health, and the health of our communities.
Winona County has joined with other counties in the region, along with the support of Blue Cross and Blue Shield and the Minnesota Department of Health‘s State Health Improvement Plan (SHIP), in an Active Living initiative aimed at improving the walkability and bikability of our communities. This trail plan is a part of our Active Living initiative.
